COULD SCENOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTE TO ADVANCING THE RESOLUTION OF THE POTENTIAL ISSUE OF ALIENATION IN WESTERN CLASSICAL MUSIC PERFORMANCE?
I wrote this paper to describe how musical ontology, theories of value, racism, gender roles, classism, and the seemingly harmless rituals of classical music performance all fall within scenography’s purview. I then go on to suggest how scenography could therefore be utilised to tackle accessibility in the genre, explore barriers to change, and pose potential steps forward.
